West European cities 'the world's best to live in'
Western European cities dominate a list of the world's best cities to live in, according to a new report. The survey, which calculates the quality of life in various cities around the world, is topped by Geneva, Zurich and Vienna. And eight out of the top 10 cities are European, with Vancouver in Canada and Auckland in New Zealand the only non-European cities to break into the upper echelons. Overall, 25 of the 50 cities described as the world's best to live in are European, although no cities from new member states are represented. However, it is not all good news for European cities.
The report shows some of Europe's most famous metropoles towards the bottom of the survey, with Athens, Rome and London scoring poorly due to high levels of petty crime. Eastern European cities still rank lower than their counterparts in the west, but they have boosted their position due to EU membership, the survey says. "There are noticeable differences in personal safety and security scores between many Eastern and Central European cities", said Slagin Parakatil, senior researcher at the Mercer Human Resource Consulting agency, which conducted the survey. In fact, the highest scoring cities from the new member states - Ljubljana in Slovenia, Bratislava in Slovakia and Prague in the Czech Republic proved a better record in security than several west European cities, whose rankings have dropped - like Athens, Rome, Madrid and London. The ranking is calculated using 39 criteria, including economic, environmental, medical and health considerations, schools and education, recreation, housing and political stability.
